It was 9 O’clock that cool breezy Friday evening, my results had been released earlier in the day and I could not stop dancing to Godwin with my roommates. Our noise had disturbed my neighbors on the third floor of my three storey building hostel and they had come twice to plead that we reduce our noise. The exam had been tedious for us all and we were overjoyed.
Segun’s call came just as I was apologizing to my neighbor for our loud music.
“Kemi, I’m downstairs now.”
I changed my blue short and floral tank top into my blue knee length dashiki gown. I sprayed my cologne and applied my Ruby Woo lippy even though my roommates kept whining of how late it was and the need for no make-up. Of course, I disagreed with them and applied my powder, which made them whine more about Segun and I. In the midst of their numerous questions about why he buys me gifts, our late night walks, numerous display pictures, I ran out of the room laughing.
I greeted Segun with a big hug, which lasted for a few minutes before we disentangled from our embrace because of the stares from passers-by. We began our usual walk. The road was lonely and I loved the privacy it gave us. The grass prostrated as they obeyed the command of the air that was so cool on my skin that I developed goose pimples. We went on relaying to each other details of our day respectively.
The potholes in the untarred road almost made me miss a step but Segun grabbed my arm just in time, the dirty water from the hole had splashed on my leg. As I was trying to get the dirt off my feet, Segun stood in front of me and held my arms, the air swept my hair over my face and he used his hands to move them away from my eyes. Just then a car passed by with the headlights fully shone in our direction.
We stopped at our usual spot. Segun had found this spot a month ago, which was in front of a bungalow in the staff quarters of the school. The spot had an abandoned grey Peugeot parked beside the road, which we sat on usually. It was usually quiet there and the security men never harassed or complained about us staying out late into the mornings.
Segun insisted on making reservations at Oriental Gardens restaurant, which I initially hesitated about, but after much persistence from Segun and the reminder that my results were worth celebrating, I changed my mind. We talked about many things, and after spending about four hours together which seemed like minutes, our gist was brought to an abrupt end by the thunder and drizzling of the rain.
PS: It’s day 2 of my Writing101.
The assignment: Today, choose a place to which you’d like to be transported if you could — and tell us the backstory. How does this specific location affect you? Is it somewhere you’ve been, luring you with the power of nostalgia, or a place you’re aching to explore for the first time?
Today’s twist: organize your post around the description of a setting.
I wrote a part of this in class while waiting for the lecturer to come. I can do this! 😀
Day 1 here. 🙂
