This year has basically been a year of unintentional self discovery for me. I’ve always thought of myself as someone who could wriggle out of situations easily but this year handed me some losses that were necessary for me to realise I’m not superman (maybe like batman without the money).
The year began like any other year for me. I had no resolutions as usual (I usually do this so I can be pleasantly surprised). I worked at the emergency department of the hospital I was posted to for my service year. As a doctor you get used to the idea that people die, but working in the emergency department basically gives you front row seats to the show. You save some and lose some, if not more. This already is enough to break you especially when you know you could have done better with better facilities and policies in place. At a point you feel you can’t stomach it but still go home to eat amala with the hands that were soaked in blood or some other body fluids earlier in the day.
Fast forward to end of first quarter of the year, I had a relationship I always hoped will last a lifetime end. I always thought I was gonna be a hot mess if it got to that point but I did surprise myself this time.I channeled whatever hurt I endured during that period to work and preparing for a major exams I should have written earlier if I wasn’t so good at procrastination. Results not out yet but I’mpositive it’s going to be good news.
In retrospect, it was a good year. I made great friends including this woman who practically held me at gun point to write this piece. She has inspired certain aspects of my life and personal growth and I’m grateful. Also made giant strides as regards my career,I’m of sound mind and body which is more than enough reason to be grateful. I even started praying more often and going to church again.
I can say I was pleasantly surprised as to what I achieved this year and how much I changed. I’m really looking forward to the new year with a plan for the first time.
Cheers!
