The Year of No Chill
From the moment Olamide told Don Jazzy not to step foot on the mainland again, we all knew 2016 was going to be lit. 2016 didn’t even see this coming, it was probably still rubbing cream and we grabbed our metaphorical popcorn watching to see how events will unfold. That fight didn’t last as long as we would have liked but it was the beginning of greater things to come.
The year of Lessons
2016 had lots of these but most importantly I learnt that experience is overrated, I mean look at Donald Trump. Social media is for noise makers, the real people that get stuff done are not on twitter. If you put all your hopes on your social media fan base, you will end up like Hilary Clinton. Whether it takes six months or six minutes to appoint your ministers, does not really matter. And never appoint someone that wears a red beret as minister. Knowing the name of something or someone is not the same as knowing that thing or that person, Brexit, Anyone.
The year of the Book
I found time to read – and reread – a number of the books on my list. Zero to One by Peter Thiel, The lean startup by Eric Ries, The Design of everyday things, Emotional Design both by Don Norman, The innovators Dilemma by some guy I cannot remember and Don’t make me think by Steve something something – all great books!
The Year of the Underdog
I am not much of a football junkie but when I learnt about Claudio Raneiri and his boys coming from the bottom of the table to top the EPL I found myself checking the stats after every match to see how my boys were doing. And they did just fine. 2016 taught me to keep dreams alive and take my shot anything is possible.
The Year of the You or Me
2016 is the year of the you. Individual power is fast becoming a thing. With time I learn how much I can do as an individual with resolve. And 2016 has taken that knowledge to greater heights. I can make choices that make me feel better or worse. I can make other people happy and I can make them mad and because I apologized does not automatically mean they’ll forgive me – they’re not God. I can bag an MBBS degree and start working on my startup. *wink*
The Year of Alliances
My personal goal for 2016 was to work with as many people as possible, discover my passions and expand my Design and Tech portfolio. I did that. From UX design to Product Design and working with numerous other startups in fin tech, health tech and sports. I really got my hands in so many pies. And now it’s time to narrow down and focus which is exactly what 2017 will be. The year of Focus.
And to think the Chinese calendar called 2016 the year of the snake. Lol, sorry snake.
